Welcome to the APTT Wiki!
What is a Wiki?
The word 'Wiki' comes from the Hawaiian language and means 'quick'. In the context of computers and the Internet, it refers to a server software programme that enables any registered user to create web pages by just typing text into their web browser. You don't need any web design or coding skills to create pages of information using this system! It's also possible for multiple individuals to work on the same page or pages without 'stepping on each other's toes'.
There are many Wikis on the Internet, of which the most famous is 'Wikipedia'. The APTT Wiki uses the same software as Wikipedia does (MediaWiki).
As an APTT member, what can I do with it?
This Wiki is intended to be a site where any paid-up APTT member can create their own page to give details about the work that they do, list their CV, and generally promote themselves as a tutor in adult education. These individual member's pages have replaced the old APTT tutor database by letting any member write what they wish about themselves and update this whenever they feel is necessary. This will avoid the long delays associated with the previous database system, which had to be updated by the Secretary. The Wiki is still searchable (see the search box on the left!).
How much does it cost?
If you are an APTT member you can have a page to yourself for free for as long as you pay your annual subscription. If you are not a member you need to join the APTT to be able to create a page. If you are a member via affiliation of another organisation (or Corporate Membership), then contact the secretary and a blank page will be set up for you in our Afiliated Organisations section.
How do I create a page?
Generally speaking this is very simple. Create an account for yourself and login. Go to the Member's Pages and click on your name in the alphabetical list. Then click the Edit tab at the top of the page and start typing in the edit box under the existing database information. This is (for the most part) just like word processing. When finished, click the Save Page button at the bottom of the edit box, and then logout of your account. For further information as to how to lay out your page, please read the MediaWiki Handbook, HERE
