Welcome to the APTT - The Association of Part-Time Tutors

Contents

A few details about us:

  • We are a wholly voluntary Association!
  • We have no paid staff, and are run by local groups of part-timers, meeting to organise their own training, skill-sharing, advice and general vocational and personal support.
  • All subscriptions and donations go to administer the Association (i.e. paying for out of pocket expenses of volunteer organisers and general APTT projects).
  • We work on a collective, equal and non-discriminatory basis.
  • We are non-sectarian, non-party political.
  • We are not a trade union, though we actively support part-time teachers who take part in union affairs (as appropriate).
  • The APTT is open to all part-timers, no matter where they work or what subject they teach!
  • We heartily welcome new members, or initiatives to set up local APTT Branches elsewhere!

Answers to 'Frequently Asked Questions' (FAQ)

  • The APTT was formed in 1995 by Lesley Booth and Bob Groves
  • At the time of writing (May 2006), it has over 200 members, both part-time tutors, and non-teachers who support the APTT's work.
  • Members live and work all over the north of England, though most originate from Tyneside
  • It has retired, non-working, Associate and Corporate members
  • The APTT’s primary aim is to empower part-time teachers in the post-compulsory sector by providing training designed, organised, administered and taught by part-timers
  • Its other purposes include working to build solidarity, sharing information, monitoring terms/conditions and fighting to raise the professional standing of part-time freelance teaching.
  • The APTT works closely with the main teaching unions (especially NATFHE and AUT)
  • Most APTT training is through the Association’s accredited ‘PLATO’ programme of CPD courses.
  • All APTT PLATO training targets Key Areas of the FENTO standards
  • PLATO stands for ‘Programme of Learning for Adult Teachers and Organisers’
  • PLATO modules include courses on interactive teaching methods, learning theory, quality & evaluation, assessment and course design.
  • There is also an APTT ‘general course programme’ on subjects unrelated to teacher training, called ‘SOCRATES’. These courses are open to any member of the public.
  • APTT’s training role is often delivered in partnership with many other educational bodies, including WEA Newcastle Branch, Barnardos, Gateshead and Tyne Metropolitan Colleges,NATFHE, Northumberland Adult Education Service, AUT, Age Concern, University of Newcastle CLL, Wallsend Peoples Centre, North East and Cumbrian Co-op, etc.
  • The APTT Working Group meets every other month. All APTT members are entitled to attend full APTT Council meetings three times a year.
  • The Association’s web site is at: www.aptt.org.uk

The APTT Within the UK

  • Anyone can join the APTT! Even if you are not a teacher you can take part and support one of the UK's fastest growing educational movements - and help support the training and development of teachers. If you are a teacher you should join as a FULL member, whilst those not involved in the teaching profession join as ASSOCIATE members. Subscriptions, at the time of writing this page, are set from April to April (but note: this may be varied by decision of the APTT at any time). Institutions, companies and associations may join as CORPORATE members ('Affiliates') - please enquire with the Secretary for further details.

Membership Benefits

include:
  • Contact with other tutors
  • Help on hundreds of subjects areas from professional tutors, lecturers, facilitators and trainers
  • Independent advice and guidance
  • Priority access to all the APTT's free courses
  • Work towards peer-recognition via award of the post-nominal letters 'MAPTT' (Member of the Association of Part-Time Tutors)
  • An entry in the APTT's on-line database - the only independent and publically accessible tutor database in the UK
  • Design and develop your own course, accredit it and seek funding for it via APTT
  • A chance to have a voice and make a difference in adult education
  • On-line Course Development facilities via our 'ATutor' system
  • etc.

Why not also consider setting up a Branch of the APTT yourself? Local action is much more effective and gives a chance to discuss news, views and problems which are relevant to members.

The APTT Outside the UK

If you're looking at this page from outside the UK then it is unlikely that joining the APTT will be of direct benefit to you at present. But why not start up your own fraternal organisation on the APTT model in your own country?

Remember: it pays to be organised!

We will be happy to give advice to anyone wanting to do this. Don't forget to let us know about any developments in this area! We would be DELIGHTED to hear your news!

You may however wish to have an APTT database entry at this site. This currently costs 20 pounds sterling (we accept internationally negotiable transfers) and is SUBJECT TO AVAILABLE DATABASE SPACE. Of necessity, UK APTT members have priority here. Please contact the General Secretaru to apply or for further details. Alternatively, snail-mail should be sent to:
